Alex Merritt

Alex Merritt was born in 1981 in Washington, DC. Having previously lived and worked in Jersey City, New Jersey, Merritt recently moved his studio to Arizona.

It was in his late 20s that Merritt took up painting, having been introduced to art for its therapeutic qualities while living in a treatment centre for addiction. Since his first solo exhibition in New York, Merritt’s works have been acquired by multiple collections worldwide.

Social and emotional disharmonies permeate his work as Merritt is not afraid to address the dichotomy of life, encapsulating the haunting beauty and anguish of the human condition.

Charity Focus

Alex supports DIGDEEP’s The Navajo Water Project, which brings clean, hot and cold running water to Navajo families across New Mexico, Utah and Arizona. Over 150 years ago, the Navajo tribe signed a treaty with the federal government giving up their land in exchange for housing, infrastructure and health care - yet more than a third of these families still don’t have access to a tap or toilet at home. A % of proceeds from sales of Alex’s work goes to DIGDEEP.
