Haunting and evocative, the smudges of color and thick encrusted layers of Alex Merritt’s paintings hint at desolation; ethereal portraits and barren landscapes each made with an amaranthine depth. And though the human forms may be abstract, the emotive capabilities of his work are exact. The guttural screams, grunts of agony and whispers of abject despair are perfectly depicted in an Auerbachian mania of oil chunks and charcoal scratches

Disrupted Realism: Paintings for a Distracted World

by John Seed (Foreword by Katherine Stanek)

“Disrupted Realism brings together 38 artists whose painting responds to the subjectivity and disruptions of modern experience. John Seed has selected artists he sees as visionaries in this developing movement. The artists’ impulses toward disruption are as individual as the artists themselves, but all share the need to include perception and emotion in their artistic process”
