An inaugural exhibition by Sonia Wise

A little different celebrated the distinct humour and vitality of Sonia Wise’s painting. Inspired by the surroundings of her home and garden, Sonia uses her art to capture the inherent character of the objects that make up our lives.

Combining bright, overtly joyful colours and simple forms, Sonia’s works have the directness and veracity of Naïve or Outsider Art. Although representing everyday objects in the long tradition of still-life paintings, her pieces have a natural charm and fresh energy which speaks to Sonia’s innate skill.

A wonderful collection of Cornish pots – jugs, vases and bowls fill Sonia’s house. These forms, and the vibrant fabrics they share a home, have become Wise’s inspiration. Her love of well crafted and honest materials is reflected in her paintings. She paints intuitively – often using acrylic on rough boards or, when the image will benefit from a 3D quality, with collage and mixed media. Her practice combines raw materials, craftsmanship and the home made, presenting a vibrant and refreshing body of work.

Showing online and by appointment at the Branch Arts viewing space in Charlbury, A little different celebrated Sonia’s ability to paint intuitively – and was her inaugural solo exhibition.
