About Katie Hellon

Katie’s work and exhibitions are wholly focused on the act of making – art is ‘a process of exploration uncovering something new to play with’. Over the years, her multi-disciplinary practice has revealed reoccurring themes and preoccupations.

Early works incorporated mosaics into hanging forms dictated by number patterns and meandering shapes evoking both the macroscopic and microscopic; their random and controlled movements questioned the role of artistic intention. These were formative ideas that would reshape and consolidate over time.

Looking back over her work, Katie suggests motivations and inspirations which are clear to her now, but were unknown or unrealised at the moment of creation.

Often spontaneous or drawing on her unconscious mind, Katie’s practice contrasts creative impulse with a controlled and regulated method, which she describes as ‘straddling chaos and order
